I was drawn to William O’Neil Securities because of their differentiated approach to the market and their unique origin story that really sets them apart from others in the industry. The company is built on data, analytics, and a historical database, all of which can be leveraged when thinking about a unique product within trading. The other thing I noticed was the quality of people across the organization, it is a collaborative working environment full of thoughtful individuals with different experiences and perspectives.
I have spent around 20 years on the buyside trading for Mutual Funds and Hedge Funds, building/supporting trading desks in Boston, NY, London, and Hong Kong, so the opportunity to shape a new vertical within William O’Neil Securities is both exciting and energizing. I am looking forward to applying my background in electronic trading and structuring a new vertical within trading at William O’Neil Securities, broker/dealer of O’Neil. It’s a unique opportunity to apply Bill O’Neil’s methodology to a product leveraging all the things that others are currently trying to build yet O’Neil has had for decades using data analytics to inform trading decisions.
I came up through the ranks at MFS Investment management as a summer intern while at Colby College to then become a junior trader and eventually a senior trader both in Boston and London over my 15 years there. I became a Chartered Market Technician (CMT), which provided me with a unique technical perspective so that I could add value among the analysts and portfolio managers who were more fundamentally focused. I have always liked the trader-manager partnership, which led me to Folger Hill, a multi-manager hedge fund where I ran the global trading desk but also partnered with sector managers to trade their books. It was a great learning experience and helped me expand my knowledge base.
The biggest challenge whenever you establish a new line of business is bringing in people from various places to collaborate and share your vision of productization so that you can present an offering that not only resonates with the clients but helps them with efficiencies and outperformance. The quality of the O’Neil team and their desire to see this offering succeed has been incredibly supportive, and we are lucky to have outside partners that have helped us move from discovery, to ideation, to implementation.
When I’m not at work, I enjoy the outdoors and all the seasons of New England (except mud season). My wife and I have three boys and two dogs, and I spend my time skiing, hiking, cycling, and doing anything outside. I enjoy coaching youth sports and being part of a small community where everyone contributes to make it a better place. I’m a volunteer Ski Patroller at Stratton Mountain Resort, which has been a really challenging yet rewarding experience.
I really appreciate the culture that O’Neil has developed and the organizational structure, which allows creative people to bring their expertise and apply it to help the firm succeed, and I am looking forward to doing my part.
